One and The Same FAQ

Did you write One and The Same specifically for the Playlist for the Planet contest?

Yep. June 25th, 2010 I started writing the song while my daughter Grace was in the bathtub (It’s our semi-regular Daddy Daughter routine & where I have written many of songs)! I have no doubt that my three daughters, and thoughts of my my future grand children, are the reason this song came together so quickly. Within 5 minutes, I immediately could hear the violins, female duet & everyone singing along in my head.

I made the decision right then and there that I would do whatever it took to get the song completed for the contest. From there it took a little less than 4 weeks of part time studio work & an awesome producer engineer by the name of Len Milne (Bedside Studios, Winnipeg) to bring One and The Same to life.

Who is that amazing female singer that comes in after the first verse/chorus?

That would be the amazingly awesome Samantha Rech. She is my voice coach, who just happened to owe me about an hour & a half of back lessons. So I convinced her to sing on my song instead of rescheduling more lessons. I’m so glad she agreed!!!! You can find out more about her on her MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/samantharech

Who are all the people singing along in the last half of the song?

I love the fact that almost every musician that played on the song also lent their voice for the gang vocals (truly amazing musicians & Winnipegers). The most amazing part is that I was also able to get my Mom, Dad & Mother In-Law to participate in the group sing along (more stories about that for another time:). It’s one of those small things that I can pick out in the recording that makes me smile. If we are going to save the planet, just like this song, we have to all take ownership, regardless of race, generation or gender, and come together and have fun saving ourselves! I truly believe we can do it.

What musicians play on ‘One and The Same’?

Lee Raito– male vocals & two acoustic guitar parts.

Samatha Rech– Lead Female Vocals

Len Milne– Electric Guitar, Egg Shaker, Engineer & Producer Extraordinaire

Blaine Badiuk– Violin

Todd Lesage– Drums

Travis Hauge– Bass

As more questions are asked I will be happy to answer them. I’m just so happy that people have connected with this song and want it to win Playlist for the Planet. Regardless of whether or not it wins, this song makes, and will continue to, me think every day before I make decisions that might impact our environment and planet earth. This song & our earth are part of your an my legacy! You and I really are the world, One and The Same, it is up to you I to sing along and save her.

Voting Now Open for Playlist For The Planet

I’m so bloody excited about this song I wrote & recorded, that I have rewritten this  5 times. Words can’t describe my excitement & I just want as many people as possible to listen to it.

Why?

I entitled the song ‘One & The Same’! I wrote it as an environmental anthem, specifically for a contest called ‘Playlist for the Planet’ and I have never, EVER, wanted to win something so bad in all my life! I’ll admit that wanting to win for the potential fame was & still is a little part of it, but there is zero fortune to be made for me personally. If my song wins and is selected to be on the Playlist for the Planet Album, ALL PROCEEDS for its sale will go to the David Suzuki Foundation. (David & his organization are the ones that are truly helping to save our planet!)

When you listen to the song & the lyrics I think you will understand even better… I think you’ll love it.

Studio Work Almost Done

The last musicians are scheduled in for this Monday evening (violin & female vocals). It is going to be utterly wicked hearing ‘One & The Same’ as a completed song including bass, drums, guitar, violin, female vocal harmony & gang vocals!

I have been taking a few pictures in Studio, so will be posting them soon along with crediting all the amazing musicians who have contributed to this project.

We should be mixing & editing by mid-week and sent off for mastering by later this week. If all goes according to plan, I’ll have the song uploaded to the CBC website, competing in ‘Playlist for the Planet!’ well before the deadline.

Next step, getting everyone ready to vote the song up starting August 15th!!!

In Studio This Wednesday

Well, it’s official.

I am booked in with Len Milne (BedSide Recording Studio) to start recording ‘One & The Same‘ for David Suzuki’s Playlist for the Planet. To say I am excited is an understatement!!!

Since the deadline for uploading songs to  Suzuki’s contest is August 15th we are going to have to work fast to pull all the musicians together necessary. This song will hopefully have female vocal harmonies, tambourine, bongos, piano, group vocals & possibly violin. Trying to get this puppy finished by the third week in July to allow at least three weeks to promote on & offline.

Whatever you are doing this Wednesday evening… please send any good Karma available my way 🙂

One And The Same- David Suzuki Playlist for the Planet

I wrote this song yesterday specifically for David Suziki’s Playlist for the Planet contest. I am going into studio over the next two weeks to at least get a decent acoustic, voice & piano version of the song completed!

Wish me luck!

Here are the lyrics:

One and the same
You are the world
Isn’t it a shame
That your killing yourself
That’s so cruel… You are a fool

One and the same
We are the world
Isn’t it a shame
That we’re killing ourselves
That’s so dumb… The world is one

They say there’s time
I’m not so sure
It’s up to you and I
To save the earth

One and the same
You are the world
We take all the blame
Now we are saving ourselves
That’s so fun… The world is one

Tell Me Something Lyrics

Here is a brand new song (May 2010) and again plan to record in studio this fall!

You can listen to the song here: Tell Me Something

I use to always say, “Tell me something I don’t know!” It finally became a song, that I hope you like and possibly relate to in your own life!

Here it is:

Tell me something I don’t know
Tell me something original
Tell me something I’d like to hear

Other than why it’s different this time
It’s different this time, It’s different this time, It’s different this time

Tell me something I can get
Tell me something I won’t regret
Tell me something I’d like to hear

Other than why it’s different this time
It’s different this time, It’s different this time, It’s different this time

Tell me something I don’t know
Tell me something original
Tell me something I’d like to hear

Other than why it’s different this time
It’s different this time, It’s different this time, It’s different this time

I Don’t Give a Damn Lyrics

Here is a new song written this month. This song is about pride and not settling…

You can listen to it here:  I Don’t Give a Damn

I don’t give a damn
What you want from me
You’re the faceless man
Thinking it’s all free

I don’t give a damn
What you think of me
Look in the sand
Nothing you will see

Oh, I’m free

Oh, I’m free
Oh, can’t you see
Oh, I’m me
Oh, so free

I so give a damn
About the soul in me
I so give a damn
Where I plant my feet

I so give damn
What i have to see
I so give a damn
What I want to be

Oh, I’m free

Oh, I’m free
Oh, can’t you see
Oh, I’m me
Oh, so free

The Sun Goes Down Over Mexico Lyrics

You can listen to the song here: The Sun Goes Down Over Mexico

I wrote this song in early 2010 for my little brother (Petri) & his new bride  to be (Marni). Rather than get up and give a speech at his wedding in Playa de Carmen, Mexico I passionately performed this song in a packed Italian restaurant. There are very few moments in life that can be labeled as truly spectacular and this is one I will never, ever forget.  I wrote this song from the grooms point of view where he sings to his bride telling her this is our time & I want to be with you forever… marry me.

I plan to record this song in studio later this year.  The lyrics are below the image.

The Sun Goes Down Over Mexico Lyrics

The Sun Goes Down Over Mexico, by Lee Raito

The sun goes down over Mexico

The sand burns into the sea

It’s time for margarita

It’s time for you and me

Oh, I know a thing or two about love

I know a thing or two about you and I

I know forever is a long time

That’s fine by me

The sun goes down over Mexico

The sand burns into the sea

It’s time for Sandos

It’s time for you and me

Oh, I know a thing or two about love

I know a thing or two about you and I

I know forever is a long time

Marry me

Te amo, te amo, te amo

Marry me
